The search for the missing Titanic submersible has caught the attention of people globally. After the submersible lost contact with its command ship 900 miles east of Cape Cod, the US Navy launched a large-scale operation.
As per a news report, the missing Titanic is carrying five people — a British adventurer, a French diver, a Pakistani father and son, and the founder of OceanGate Expeditions, the company that operated the tour to the Titanic wreckage.
Search operations are still underway but the submarine has crossed the critical 96-hour oxygen mark. It is still not clear whether the five occupants survived or consequently took steps to conserve the air supply.
On Thursday, a French research ship equipped with an unmanned robot able to search deep underwater arrived near the wreck of the Titanic to join a massive search and rescue operation for a missing submersible.
Search operations have been hindered by underwater mountains and valleys, deep-sea water pressure and weather conditions. More than four days into the search, there are only a few clues about the Titan's location. The search area is twice the size of Connecticut – in waters 2 1/2 miles (4 kilometers) deep.
The Titan submersible was estimated to have a 96-hour supply of breathable air when it launched Sunday morning in the North Atlantic. But with the deadline in sight, experts note that the oxygen supply number is an imprecise estimate. It could be extended if passengers have taken measures to conserve breathable air. It is also not known if they survived since the sub disappeared.
