A "Swift" Rise

Despite a year marked by rising concert prices, American music artist Taylor Swift continues to achieve remarkable milestones on her ongoing 'The Eras Tour'. Reports indicate that Swift is earning over $13 million per night, which amounts to more than ₹100 crore. With a massive and devoted fan base known as the Swifties, she is projected to gross more than $1 billion, a feat no artist has ever accomplished. So far, the tour has generated $300 million from 22 dates, according to Pollstar. The estimation by Pollstar suggests that the Eras Tour could surpass $1.3 billion in total earnings.

Bloomberg reports that the average ticket price for a Taylor Swift show is $254. Notably, seven out of the 25 best-selling acts of the first half of the year are charging more than $200 per night. This includes artists like Bruce Springsteen ($224), Phish ($206), and George Strait ($282).

In comparison, five years ago, only Britney Spears and Celine Dion charged over $200 per ticket. The highest-earning artist of that year, Ed Sheeran, had an average ticket price of $89. Since then, the average price of the top 25 tours has risen by $37, or $13.60 when adjusted for inflation, indicating that ticket prices are increasing at a faster rate than consumer prices overall.

Before 2018, most concert tickets ranged from $75 to $130, with a few acts charging at the higher end. However, there are now more top artists charging over $200 than those charging less than $100. Interestingly, 2018 coincided with Taylor Swift's last tour before the Eras Tour. Since her Reputation tour in 2018 and even going back to Speak Now in 2011, the cost of attending a Taylor Swift concert has increased by $134. Despite the price hike, more than 1.1 million people have still purchased tickets to see her perform.
