| IPS C Vijayakumar, Posted As DIG Coimbatore Dies By `Suicide`. |
On Friday morning, Deputy inspector general of police (Coimbatore range) C Vijayakumar (aged 47) shot himself dead with a pistol at his camp office in Race Course.
According to reports, Vijayakumar went for a morning walk and arrived at his camp office at approximately 6:45am. He requested his personal security officer (PSO) to give him his pistol, and then exited the office carrying it. At around 6:50am, he fatally shot himself.
The on-duty police personnel at the camp office notified higher-ranking officers, who promptly arrived at the scene.
The body was sent to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Further investigations are on.
Vijayakumar was suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder cum depression (OCD), a police officer said citing a doctor who had treated the IPS officer. “Depression was the reason for Vijayakumar’s suicide,” additional director general of police (ADGP -law&order) A Arun said.
On January 6, 2023, Vijayakumar assumed the role of DIG of Police for the Coimbatore range, succeeding MS Muthusamy who was transferred to the position of DIG for the Vellore range.
Vijayakumar is a member of the IPS 2009 batch. He previously held the position of superintendent of police in various districts, including Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvarur. Afterward, he served as the deputy commissioner of police in Chennai's Anna Nagar before being promoted to DIG and assigned to the Coimbatore range.
