On Wednesday, the Haryana government appointed senior IPS officer Shatrujeet Kapur as the new state police chief, succeeding P K Agrawal, whose term concluded on August 15.
A UPSC panel recently shortlisted three Haryana cadre IPS officers, including R C Mishra and Mohd Akil (1989-batch officers), alongside Shatrujeet Kapur (1990 batch), from whom the state government selected the next director general of police (DGP).
Sources indicate that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had a preference for Kapur, who currently serves as the Director General of the state's anti-corruption bureau.
“On the consideration of the panel received from Union Public Service Commission, the Governor of Haryana is pleased to appoint Sh. Shatrujeet Singh Kapur, IPS as Director General of Police, Haryana for a minimum tenure of at least two years from the date of his assumption of charge…,” a government order said.
Following the Supreme Court's directives, the state government was required to choose one officer among the three IPS officers shortlisted by the UPSC, adhering to the guidelines.
Last month, the state government submitted a proposal to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) with the names of nine IPS officers, seeking the shortlisting of three candidates.
Subsequently, Kapur took on the role of the DGP at the police headquarters situated in Panchkula.
