The death of an 18-year-old student who allegedly jumped off the second-floor balcony of his hostel on August 9 in Kolkata, is now being investigated by the police, with a focus on a potential sexual harassment angle.
The first-year student's untimely demise has sparked widespread protests in the state, with citizens demanding stricter measures against student harassment and ragging on campus.
On Sunday morning, two additional students from Jadavpur University (JU) were arrested for their suspected involvement in the incident. The two arrested individuals, identified as Dipsekhar Dutta and Manotosh Ghosh, are both second-year undergraduate students at JU. Dutta is pursuing economics, while Ghosh is studying sociology.
Following an extensive night-long interrogation, they were taken into custody by the police. Kolkata's Police Commissioner, Vineet Goyal, stated that the investigation is being closely supervised by senior officers, with efforts being made to expedite the processing.
Earlier, a former student of the university, Sourav Chowdhury, who completed his MSc in Mathematics in 2022 but continued to stay in the hostel illegally, was arrested on Friday. All three have been remanded in police custody till August 22.
So far, the officials from Jadavpur University have refrained from commenting on the arrests made by the Kolkata police.
