Israel conducted overnight airstrikes in Gaza on Wednesday last week, while retaliatory bombings have led to significant casualties, with Gaza's health ministry reporting at least 900 people killed and 4,600 wounded. The densely populated coastal enclave has seen neighborhoods flattened by continued bombing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphasized that the offensive against Hamas in Gaza “has only started.”
In Ashkelon, southern Israel, people attempted to put out fires caused by rocket attacks from Gaza. Israel's embassy in Washington revealed that the death toll from recent Hamas attacks had exceeded 1,200, with the majority of victims being civilians killed in homes, on the streets, or at outdoor gatherings.
Tensions escalated as new clashes erupted along Israel's northern borders with militants in Lebanon and Syria, underscoring the risk of a broader regional conflict. While Hamas militants threatened to execute captives in response to homes being hit in Gaza, there was no indication that this had occurred as night fell on Tuesday.
Several countries have offered to mediate an end to the fighting, which has already claimed the lives of at least 1,900 people on both sides. The death toll was expected to rise as Israel continued its airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, prompting Palestinians to seek refuge in UN shelters.
