Vardhaan Lithium to build first refinery in Nagpur

India will establish its first lithium refining and battery manufacturing facility at Additional Butibori, Nagpur, with Vardhaan Lithium (I) Pvt. Ltd. investing ₹42,532 crore. The 500-acre project, led by Chairman Sunil Joshi and MD Vedansh Joshi, will be among Asia’s largest, featuring an annual refining capacity of 60,000 tonnes of lithium and a battery production capacity of 20 GWh to support EVs and energy storage systems.

The facility aims to reduce India’s dependence on imports and build a self-reliant lithium supply chain, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ vision. Vardhaan Lithium will partner with technology firms from the USA and Europe to ensure global standards in refining and battery assembly.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, instrumental in bringing the project to the state, formalized the deal at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Hosting the country’s first lithium refinery positions Maharashtra at the forefront of India’s green industrial revolution.

The project is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boost ancillary industries, and strengthen India’s role in the global battery market amid rising demand driven by EV growth and renewable energy storage.
