MoD signs Rs 5,083 crore ALH Mk III, VL-Shtil missile deals

The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed contracts worth Rs 5,083 crore for the acquisition of six Advanced Light Helicopters ALH Mk III Maritime Role for the Indian Coast Guard and Surface to Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles for the Indian Navy. The agreements were inked at South Block, New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.

The Rs 2,901 crore contract for ALH Mk III MR has been signed with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Bengaluru under the Buy Indian Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured category. The deal includes operational role equipment, an engineering support package and performance based logistics support. The twin engine helicopters feature advanced systems superior to existing platforms and can undertake a wide range of maritime security missions from shore bases and ships at sea. The project will source equipment from over 200 MSMEs and generate about 65 lakh man hours of employment.

Separately, the Ministry signed a Rs 2,182 crore contract with JSC Rosoboronexport, Russian Federation for Surface to Air Vertical Launch Shtil missiles and associated missile holding frames for the Indian Navy. The acquisition will substantially enhance the air defence capability of frontline warships against a wide spectrum of aerial threats.

The system will strengthen the layered air defence architecture onboard naval platforms by providing rapid reaction, all weather engagement capability and improved survivability in contested maritime environments. The contract also underscores the longstanding and time tested defence partnership between India and Russia, founded on mutual trust and strategic alignment.
