Unseasonal hailstorm blankets Pune in ice, IMD Yellow alert till April 4

Residents were left stunned on Monday afternoon, March 30, 2026, as a massive hailstorm transformed parts of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad into a winter wonderland. The intense spell of unseasonal rain, accompanied by heavy hail, covered streets in a thick white blanket, making the city feel more like a high-altitude destination than a tropical hub in March. The dramatic weather shift began around 2:30 PM, catching commuters and office-goers completely off guard. Traffic ground to a halt as visibility plummeted and roads turned dangerously slippery.

Parts of the Hinjewadi IT hub witnessed hailstones covering roads and open spaces, prompting residents to liken the scene to Shimla. Baner, Pashan, Balewadi, Aundh and Mahalunge also recorded rain and hail. IMD confirmed high-intensity thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds reaching 50-60 kmph for March 30-31, with isolated hailstorm activity continuing through April 2.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a broader alert covering Mumbai, Thane, Konkan, Vidarbha and Marathwada, forecasting stormy conditions and possible hailstorms across Maharashtra from March 30 to April 4. The unseasonal rain also poses a significant threat to agriculture, with crops like mangoes and grapes in critical growth stages facing risk of major losses. Pune residents are advised to avoid open areas during afternoon and evening hours and stay alert for further updates.
