How did Bengali Actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee die? Full details inside

Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the age of 43 in a tragic drowning accident at Talsari Sea Beach near Digha, Odisha. The actor had been on location for an outdoor shoot schedule of the Bengali television serial Bhole Baba Par Karega when the fatal incident occurred. According to eyewitness accounts from the production team, the main shoot had concluded for the day and most crew members had left for lunch. Rahul chose to stay back to complete a few remaining shots. He subsequently entered the water, reportedly as part of a boating sequence, and began to drown. Crew members and technicians at the spot immediately rushed in and pulled him out of the water, but he was unresponsive. He was rushed to Digha State General Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Co-actor Bhaskar Banerjee, who plays Rahul's on-screen uncle in Bhole Baba Par Karega, confirmed the tragic sequence of events in a statement to a Bengali media. "He died by drowning. It is a tragic incident. It happened after the shooting was over during pack-up. However, the exact circumstances are still unclear," Bhaskar said. Fellow co-actor Diganta Bagchi further revealed that Rahul went alone to the water and may have become entangled in something beneath the surface, prompting the frantic rescue attempt by the crew. East Midnapore Police have registered a case of unnatural death, and West Bengal Police are currently coordinating with Balasore Police in Odisha to gather more details. An autopsy is expected to be conducted at Digha Hospital to determine the precise cause and circumstances of the drowning.

Rahul Arunoday Banerjee was one of the most beloved faces of Bengali cinema and television. Born on October 16, 1983, in Kolkata, he shot to superstardom with the 2008 blockbuster Chirodini Tumi Je Amar directed by Raj Chakraborty, opposite actress Priyanka Sarkar, who later became his wife. Over a career spanning nearly two decades, he featured in acclaimed projects including Zulfiqar, Na Hannyate, Byomkesh Gotro, and The Academy of Fine Arts (2025), and was also known for his popular YouTube podcast Sahaj Katha. He is survived by his wife Priyanka Sarkar and their 13-year-old son Shohoj Banerjee.

In a heartbreaking coincidence, Zubeen Garg, the legendary singer whose soulful voice immortalized the iconic song Piya Re from Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, also died in a drowning accident near Lazarus Island, Singapore, on September 19, 2025. The West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called his death an irreparable loss to Tollywood and Bengali entertainment, while tributes poured in from across the industry.
