The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on Wednesday, 15 April 2016 at multiple premises linked to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Ashok Kumar Mittal in connection with alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Search operations were carried out at business entities associated with Mittal in Jalandhar and Phagwara, Punjab, along with several other locations, as investigators widened the scope of their financial probe.
AAP leaders sharply condemned the raids, calling them a politically driven move ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal accused the BJP-led Centre of misusing central agencies for electoral gains, asserting that the people of Punjab would deliver a strong reply at the ballot box. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann echoed the sentiment, stating on X that the raids were "typical Modi style."

Manish Sisodia described the ED and CBI as the "first contingent" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's election machinery, alleging that central agency raids before state elections had become a predictable pattern. AAP MP Sanjay Singh announced he would raise the matter during Parliament's special three-day session beginning April 16.
Ashok Kumar Mittal, founder and chancellor of Lovely Professional University, was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Punjab in April 2022. He was recently appointed Deputy Leader of AAP in the Upper House, replacing Raghav Chadha, and has served on the parliamentary committees on Defence and Finance. The ED's investigation into the alleged FEMA violations is ongoing.
