Bargi Dam Boat Tragedy: Crane retrieves sunken boat; 9 dead, 29 rescued

Nine people, including a mother and her four-year-old child discovered still locked in a final embrace, died after a Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department-operated cruise boat capsized at the Bargi Dam reservoir on the Narmada River, near Khamariya Island in Jabalpur, on the evening of April 30, 2026. The vessel sank rapidly after a sudden, severe storm with winds estimated between 60 and 70 km/h struck the reservoir, generating high waves and causing the boat to lose balance within minutes.

The submerged vessel was retrieved using a crane after approximately 17 hours of sustained rescue efforts on May 1, 2026, as search operations for those still missing continued on the reservoir. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav confirmed that nine bodies have been recovered and approximately 29 people have been rescued so far, with Army personnel, NDRF teams, and SDRF units actively engaged in the ongoing operation.

Survivors have alleged that life jackets were present on the boat but were not distributed to passengers before departure, and were only accessed in the moments after the vessel began to tilt, leading to widespread panic. Eyewitnesses and survivors further claimed that the operator may have disregarded weather warnings ahead of the storm, raising serious questions of negligence.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to each injured survivor. The Madhya Pradesh government ordered a high-level probe into the incident to examine possible safety lapses and negligence, and imposed a temporary ban on cruise and boat operations at tourist sites across the state.
