The Government of India has appointed Shashi Shekhar Vempati as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for a period of three years from the date of joining. The appointment was formalised through an official notification issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on May 6, 2026.
The vacancy at the apex film certification body arose following the elevation of the outgoing Chairperson, Prasoon Joshi to the post of Chairman of Prasar Bharati, India's public broadcasting authority, which necessitated his departure from the CBFC and triggered the present appointment process.
Vempati brings with him extensive experience across media, broadcasting, and public communication. His appointment is widely expected to reinforce the institutional functioning of the CBFC, the statutory body responsible for certifying films for public exhibition across India.
