With the deadly Rafale aircraft coming into the country amid the border dispute with China, the Indian Air Force is constantly working on increasing its capabilities. Under this, this fighter aircraft is ready to be equipped with France’s HAMMER missile. The order has been extended by the Modi government to the armed forces under emergency powers for HAMMER missiles capable of targeting any target in the range of 60 to 70 KM.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, after his conference with IAF commanders on 22nd July said that the Forces have to be completely ready for any war situation with China. According to earlier discussions, Chinese Army had promised to back off from Finger 4 and 5 near Pangong Tso Lake but they haven't moved a single step from the disputed area; which is leading to further tension between India and China.
According to government sources, “orders for HAMMER missiles are being processed and the French authorities have agreed to supply them on a short notice for our Rafale fighter aircraft.” He said that in view of the urgent need of these missiles from the Air Force, the French authorities will deliver it from the existing stock for some other customers.
Significantly, the HAMMER is a mid-range air-to-ground weapon initially designed and manufactured for the French Airforce and Navy. Sources said that HAMMER will give India the ability to target any bunker or hard-core shelter in any area, including mountainous places like East Ladakh. An IAF spokesman refused to confirm or deny developments related to the new acquisition.
