Mumbai has been hit badly by the global Pandemic COVID-19 and because of it the shops and markets have suffered the most. With Bakra Eid being celebrated next week and the goats to be order onlined only, Mumbai has now faced a new problem. From the past 20 days no goats and sheeps have been slaughtered, leaving Deonar the only abbatoir in Mumbai and Largest in India unviable option for Traders and dealers for muttons.

The abbatoir which resumed again on July 3 with a set of rules and guidelines, not even a single goat or sheep has been slaughtered in the past 20 days.

Now because of this, the black market has got active by flourishing in slaughtering of animals and meat with no hygiene check.

Several traders and dealers of mutton, haved expressed their anger by stating the guidelines issued by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) as unreasonable and detrimental to business, pushing them to rely on unregularised and underground market.

Before the pandemic, Deonar used to be a hub for sales of goats, sheeps, buffalos which were brought from all across the country. The Traders used to sell livestock twice a week but now it's completely opposite. As many as 25,000 animals were sold each day.

Under new guidelines, the traders were told that, unsold animals would not be allowed to sell again in the Mandi. Also, only 40 vehicles can enter per day and each has to be registered in advance. The abbatoir has now been reduced to only slaughter 50% of the total product and the time changed from 11am-7pm for slaughtering.
