The Mumbai Police has told the Bombay High Court, that it has identified the four policemen who assaulted a 24-year old Vile Parle residents for violating lock down orders. The victim identified as Raju Devendra died soon after the attack on March 29.
The court noted that chief government pleader P Kantharia, in keeping with its orders, had previously viewed the CCTV footage of the incident and that she did not find "any member of the public being part of any mob assaulting the deceased".
A division bench of Chief Justice, Dipankar Darts and Justice Anuja Prabhudesai said in their order that ,"On the contrary, the four police man referred to above, are seen to have used fibre lathis, in a bid to discipline the deceased."
The police had said "the attackers" allowed Devendra to return home when he developed a fever around 6 a.m. and his family took him to hospital where he died soon. Devendra's family alleged that he had been assaulted by police after being caught loitering in violation of the curfew.
