'YamaRaj' - The God Of Death.

YamaRaj

Yama is born from the womb of the 'Sangya', the daughter of Vishwakarma. His wife's name is Dhumorna. His weapons are Danda, Noose and Mace and he rides on a buffalo. Chitragupt is his associate. His father's name is 'Surya'(Sun). Names of his siblings are Shani(Saturn) , Yami(River Yamuna), Ashvini Kumars, Tapati, Bhadra, Manu, Sugriva, Karna.

Yamaraj has a strange description in the Puranas. According to the Puranas, the color of Yamaraja is green and he wears red clothes.

Yama means control and patience. Yamaraj, the god of death, is also called DharmaRaj(King Of Justice). For Yama, the adjectives Pitrapati, Kritanta, Shaman, Kaal, Dandadhara, Shraddhadeva, Dharma, Jeevatesh, Mahishdhwaja, Mahishavahana, Shirnapada, Hari and Karmakar are used. Yama is known as Pluto in English. A theology is also named after Yama.

By the way, Yamraj has four special temples. One at the Vishram Ghat in Mathura, the other at the Lakshman Jhula in Rishikesh, the third at the Aima Dharmaraja Temple in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu. But the Dharmeshwar Mahadev Temple of Dharmaraja- Yamraj located in Bharmour in Himachal is the most Miraculous And Supernatural of all.

Yamraj Temple of Himachal.

This temple dedicated to Yama deity is situated at a place called Bharmour in Chamba district of Himachal. This temple looks like a house in view. The temple also has an empty chamber called the chamber of Chitragupt. It is actually believed that YamaRaj himself resides in this temple guarded by two of his 4 eyed dogs along with Chitragupt.

There is a belief associated with this temple that when a creature dies, the emissaries of Yamraj hold the soul of that person and present it in front of Chitragupta in this temple. Chitragupta gives full details of his deeds to Jeevatma. The soul is then taken to the front chamber of Chitragupta. This room is called Yamraj's office.

The area inside and around this temple are unexplainably cold, enough to send a shiver down your spine.

Here, Yamraj gives his decision to the soul according to his deeds. It is also believed that this temple has four invisible gates made of gold, silver, copper and iron. After the decision of Yamraj, Yam-Doots(Emissaries of Yama) take the soul to heaven or hell from these gates according to their deeds. The Garuda Purana also mentions four gates in four directions in the court of Yamaraja. YamRaj's actual place of residence is known as 'Yamlok'.

It Takes 18 days for a human soul to reach Yamalok.

The temple is termed as the court of Dharamraj, is locally called ‘dhai-podi’, which means two and half steps.
