Mumbai Marks The 12th Anniversary of 26/11 Attack

 


Today 26th November,2020 marks the 12th anniversary of a deadly terror attack on the city of Mumbai which shock the entire nation and the world. These attack was carried out by 10 Terrorist of Terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba. This shooting and bombing attack lasted 4 days in Mumbai. Around 174 people were killed(including the 9 attackers) and more than 300 were left wounded.

Around 8 attacks took place in the region of South Mumbai. They were the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai Chabad House, The Oberoi Trident, The Taj Palace and Tower, Leopold Cafe,Cama Hospital, Nariman House and the Metro Cinema. One blast was also heard in the backstreet of St Xavier's College and one in a taxi near Vile Parle.

Around 9:30 pm, two terrorist entered the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and started to open fire on the crowds. The two intruders were identified as Ismail Khan and the Only terrorist captured alive Ajmal Kasab. They killed around 58 people and injured 104. Station Announcer Vishnu Datteram Zende played a major role in alerting the citizens and helping them escape.

Khan and Kasab then left CSMT to Cama Hospital to attack the patients. They were unable to do so as Cama had already sealed their wings. Mumbai Anti Terrorists Squad led by Police Chief Hemant Karkare then left to search for the two.

A crossfire between them took place near the hospital lane resulting in the death of Karkare, with Vijay Salaskar and Ashok Kamte. Khan and Kasab then took their squad car in which another officer named Arun Jadhav was wounded. He was able to inform his colleagues about their location before passing away. Khan and Kasab then left the squad car and took a private car and headed towards the Marine Drive.

Due to barricades, the duo had to stop the car far wide. When they tried to run away the police open fired the car and killed Khan. They thought they had killed Kasab, and when Tukaram Omble tried to open the car door, Kasab open fired him and killed him,but Omble didn't give up his grib and Kasab was arrested.

The Taj Mahal palace was one of the six prominent targets of the terrorist. Taj was famous for it's attraction and at the time of attack many high profile Foreigners were present. There were around 6 bomb blasts in Taj, one in lobby, two in the elevators and three in a restaurant and one in the Oberoi Trident.

The other site target was the Nariman House. Local Residents were kept hostage by the Terrorists. Naval Helicopters and National Security Guards started the rescue operation. Cross firing took place and many were killed in these exchange.

There was a report that the Terrorists were getting updates due to news channels. Soon the line was cutted and the NSG Commandos stormed in the Nariman House and killed the terrorists. While trying to save his fellow commando, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was killed.

After the raid by the NSG Commandos on Morning of 29th November,2008 all Terrorists were killed and the rescue mission was completed.

Ajmal Kasab, the only surviving terrorist in interrogation admitted that all of them were from Pakistan and trained in the Pakistani Terror Group. Kasab was sentenced to Death and was hanged on 21st November,2012 nearly four years later after the attack due to trail being lengthened. He was hanged in the Yerwada Jail in Pune.
