Considered to be the lifeline of a city that never sleeps, The Mumbai Locals have been in a shutdown for more than 9 months since the pandemic began in March. Earlier the Mumbai Locals would be shutted down either due to some technical issues or monsoon but that shut down would only last few hours. This time though things have changed.
With the increase in Covid-19 the entire country was send into a lockdown phase. As slowly the government tries to unlock different sectors for the benefit of the people, the Mumbai Locals are still locked down for common people.
As of now only essential workers are allowed to board trains. Then 2 weeks ago, the Railways decided to allow all Women to travel on trains. But still they have showed no indication of allowing non Essential workers to board the trains.
President of Suburban Railway Passengers Ekta Mahasangh, Nandkumar Deshmukh has warned to start agitation(Protest) if the local trains are not started in 2 days.
"Facilities have been started in phases across the state. In the same way the general public should also be allowed to use transportation. People's Patience is now getting exhausted. As the local service is closed for commoners, they have to travel with scissors in their pocket, hence we urge them to start the local as soon as possible" said Deshmukh.
In the view of Covid-19, the cases are declining in the city but the government still fears that a second wave of Covid-19 might start soon and the Locals can easily become a prime hotspot. The Railway are yet to comment on this matter.
