Mahrez with the Matchball at the end of the game |
For a fourth consecutive time this Saturday, Manchester City defeated Burnley 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium as City finally looked to bounce back from a disappointing start of their league campaign. City come into this match after losing 2-0 to Spurs last week and perhaps needed this type of win to gain confidence going ahead in the future.
Riyad Mahrez started the scoring in the 6th minute after a swift break away by City and was teased by De Bruyne to make it 1-0 for the host. He added a second one in the 22nd minute from a direct throw in from Kyle Walker who caught the Burnley defenders sleeping. After being disallowed by the Assistant Flag for offside, City killed of the contest in the 41th minute when De Bruyne setted up Benjamin Mendy for his first City goal as he volleyed his effort in the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
Ferran Torres scored his first Premier Goal in the 66th minute with his last touch of the day before being substituted by Phil Foden to make it 4-0. Foden who just came on then assisted Riyad Mahrez to make it 5-0 to complete his Hattrick and the rout for the Citizens. This was his second premier league Hattrick, his first one was Leicester City in 2015 vs Swansea City.
In the early Kickoff Champions Liverpool dropped 2 points in the last minute in a very underlying performance by the Reds. They gave away a penalty in the 20th minute but were saved as Neal Maupay missed his penalty as he stroked it completely wide and missed the chance to give Brighton a shocking but deserving lead.
Mohammed Salah thought he had broke the deadlock in the 36th minute after he was placed clean through by Roberto Firmino. However the Egyptian was judged offside by a Toenail! After that Brighton kept on causing Liverpool the troubles.
The Reds showed their resilience and scored first from Diego Jota in the 60th minute. It looked like Liverpool had won the game when Sadio Mane headed in a free kick in the 82nd minute of the game. However his goal was ruled out for offside by VAR. This decision was actually clearly offside than the first one.
Then in stoppage time, the referee Stuart Attwell decided to take a look at the VAR and awarded penalty to Brighton which perhaps was a harsh decision to Liverpool. Pascal Gross unlike Neal Maupay scored his penalty and made it 1-1 to earn a point.
