Napoli Rename Their Stadium After Late Club Legend Diego Maradona

 

Napoli Fans were even ready to break Guidelines to pay a tribute to him

On Friday, SSC Napoli have officially renamed their stadium after Club Legend and Football great, the Late Diego Armando Maradona. Earlier known as the Sao Paulo Stadium, it will now be known as the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The Argentine Attacking Midfielder led the Italian side to two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990. To this date that remains the only time when Napoli won the league.

He joined from Barcelona in 1984 and spent 7 years in Naples also winning the 1987 Coppa Italia and the 1989 UEFA Cup. It was at his time at Napoli when Maradona single handedly took Argentina to World Cup Glory in 1986.

Ever since news broke out of his passing away, Fans gathered at the stadium to pay their tributes to him and Napoli honoured him by wearing a shirt with "Maradona 10" on their back against HNK Rijeka in their Europa League encounter.

Napoli owner Aurelio de Laurentilis was the first one to proposed the renaming of the stadium which was then backed by the Mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris.
