Steve Smith's Hundred followed by late wickets put Australia in strong contention

With the first day being cut short due to rain, Australia finished the day with a score of 166/2 in 55 overs with Labuschagne and Smith unbeaten at the score of 67 and 31 respectively.

The duo continued where they left off the previous day, adding a 100 run partnership for the 3rd wicket. Just as he had started to eye off triple figures Labuschagne was edged out at slip by Ravindra Jadeja as the catch was taken by Captain Ajinkya Rahane. Labuschagne scored 91 runs of 196 balls.

As the wickets kept on falling on regular intervals from the one end, Steve Smith kept his footmark at the other end. With the score at 288-7 in 97.5 overs, Smith placed a shot through the on side for a triple to complete his hundred. This was his 27th test Hundred and his 8th against India.

He kept on going to the end was dismissed in the most unwanted way a batsmen would have hoped for. He placed a shot and then decided to go for a double. However the ball was picked by Ravindra Jadeja and his direct hit ended the innings of Smith and Australia as the Hosts finished up with a score of 338 in 105.4 overs. Steve Smith scored 131 runs of 226 balls.

India had a new opening duo again. This time Rohit Sharma made his first appearance in the series. He and Shubman Gill started off great against the Aussies.

Just as the innings was building up for India, Rohit Sharma was dismissed in a soft way after he tried to drive a shot down the field only for the ball to go straight into the hands of bowler Josh Hazlewood. The score was 70/1 after his dismissal.

Soon Shubman Gill Completed his first half century for India but was unable to convert it into a bigger score as he was edged out at Gully by Pat Cummins. India finished Day 2 at a score of 96/2 in 45 overs with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle with the scores of 9 and 5 respectively. India trail Australia by 242 runs.
