Government-owned telecom operator BSNL has launched a satellite phone service in India, priced at ₹1,34,166 inclusive of all taxes. The device is aimed at users who need reliable voice communication in remote and off-grid locations where conventional mobile towers do not reach.
Announcing the launch on its official X account, BSNL said, "When conventional mobile networks can't reach, the BSNL Satellite Phone keeps you connected. Designed for challenging environments, making it an ideal solution for Defence, Maritime, Disaster Response, Mining, Remote Operations and Adventure Travel."
Unlike regular smartphones that depend on nearby cell towers, the handset connects directly to satellites, developed in partnership with global satellite network provider Inmarsat. It offers crystal-clear voice calls, SOS emergency support and long battery life, built for rugged, harsh-environment use.
- A noteworthy factor of this launch is that, it is positioned as a specialised, mission-critical tool rather than a mass-market device, with BSNL targeting defence personnel, maritime crews, disaster response teams, mining operations, remote field workers, pilgrims and adventure travellers. Buyers must obtain approval from the Department of Telecommunications before purchase or use, since satellite phones fall under strict regulation in India, and unauthorised possession or operation can attract legal consequences under Indian law.
The launch comes as BSNL continues expanding its terrestrial 4G network, having recently commissioned nearly 99,000 4G sites nationwide, with the government reportedly considering allowing further site expansion. Interested individuals or organisations can visit their nearest BSNL office or contact the company's helpline for procurement details and eligibility requirements.
