The Great Wall Of India Turns 48

 

Today 11th January,2021 marks the 48th Birth Anniversary of one of India's and Cricket's finest batsmen Rahul Dravid. Known for his unique style of resistance and patience in batting,he is often referred as "The Great Wall of India" or simply the "The Wall".

Born in Indore,Madhya Pradesh in 1973, Dravid would go on to represent India for 16 years in Test and ODI's from 1996-2012. He would make his debut on 3rd April 1996 vs Sri Lanka in a ODI. Dravid would go on to play 344 ODI for India scoring a staggering 10,889 runs. He would also  go on score 13,288 runs in 164 Tests.

He played some crucial eye catching knock, one of which is that game at Eden Gardens vs Australia. The Aussies had won the previous 16 Test Matches in a row and were on the verge of 17th win when they bowled out India for 171 and enforced a follow on with a huge lead of 274 runs.

Laxman who had scored had played a great inning in the first inning was promoted to Dravid's Number 3 spot. When Dravid joined Laxman in the middle of the third day with the score at 232/4 with India still trailing by 42 runs,History was written. The two of them would go on stage one of the greatest fightbacks in the game.

They batted out the remaining Day 3 and batted the Whole Day 4 stunning the Cricketing world. Their partnership of 376 runs helped India get to a score of 657/7 with Dravid getting runned out for 180 while Laxman scored 281 setting up a total of 384 runs for Australia to win. The Aussies were bowled out for a score of 212 with 6 wickets for Harbhajan Singh which included a Hattrick as well.

Dravid would go on to win the Arjuna Award in 1998,the Padma Shri in 2004 and Padma Bhushan in 2013. He would even win the Don Bradman award in 2012 along with Australian Pace Legend Glenn McGrath.

At the moment he monitors the progress of India A and India U-19 Cricket Team. In 2019 the Board of Control of Cricket in India(BCCI) appointment Dravid as the Head of the National Cricket Academy.
