The Red Devils slaughter the Saints as United win 9-0 against Southampton

On Tuesday night it was night full of Carnage as the Red Devils slaughtered the Saints 9-0 at Old Trafford to equal the record of the highest winning margin in a Premier League home game, something they did 26 years ago when they Defeated Ipswich Town 9-0 in 1995.

Manchester United were under the spotlight. Having played good in recent weeks a real sense of title challenge was booming in their minds. After a shocking 2-1 loss at Home to bottom club Sheffield United and then followed it with a goalless draw against Arsenal. They were out there to make a statement last night.

Though it's fair to say they got some helping hand from Southampton's Defence as well. Alexander Jankewitz had the most unmemorable full senior debut as he was shown a straight Red card by referee Mike Dean for his serious challenge on Daniel James inside merely 82 seconds.

United took full use of the advantage and raced to a 4-0 half time lead thanks to strikes from Aaron Wan Bissaka (18th minute), Marcus Rashford (25th minute), an own goal by Jan Bednarek (34th minute) and Edinson Cavani(39th minute).

Southampton were unlucky to be denied a consolation goal by VAR after a very close call saw Che Adam's finger being a little ahead and in Offside position in the 54th minute. Anthony Martial added a 5th one in the 69th minute before Scott McTominay added a long range strike in the 71st minute to make it 6-0.

Bednarek's night went from bad to worse as he picked up a red card for denying a clear goal scoring opportunity and reduce the Saints to 9 men. Bruno Fernandes added the 7th goal from the penalty spot in the 87th minute before Martial added his second of the night in the 90th minute. The Record equaling goal came in the third minute of added time as Daniel James touched it from a close range to get on the scoresheet.

For a second successive season Southampton have lost a Premier League game by 9-0, having famously losing to Leicester City on 26th October,2019. After that run Southampton improved a lot and their decision to back manager Ralph Hasenhüttl. The result meant United are now level on points with Manchester City but have played two games more than the Cityzens.
