Sunday Special: Rajesh Khanna's Kati Patang (1971)

 

In this week's Sunday Special we take a look back at Rajesh Khanna's 1971 hit, Kati Patang(The Severed Kite). Directed and Produced by Shakti Samanta, this movie was one of the 17 consecutive hits of Khanna from 1969 to 1971.

Alongside Rajesh Khanna, Asha Parekh was starred in the movie. For her performance as Madhavi, Parekh would go on to claim her first Filmfare Award for Best Actresses. A legendary soundtrack comprised by R.D. Burman included the hit song such as "Yeh Shaam Mastani", "Pyaar Deewana Hota Hai", "Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai". The movie would go on to earn Rs 3.80 Crore at Box office (equivalent to Rs 146 Crore as of 2019).

The film also stars Nazir Hussain, Prem Chopra, Bindu,Sulochana and Daisy Irani. The movie was then remade in Tamil and Telugu as Nenjil Oru Mul and Punnami Chandrudu respectively.

                               Brief Synopsis-

Madhavi "Madhu" (Asha Parekh) is an orphan who grew up with her maternal uncle, who had arranged a marriage for her. At that time she was blinded in love with Kailash(Prem Chopra) and runs away on the day of her marriage. During that, she discovers Kailash in the arms of another woman, Shabnam (Bindu) and is left heartbroken. When she returns home to her uncle, she finds out that her uncle had committed suicide due to the humiliation he suffered by her. Knowing that she has no one in her life now, she decides to leave the town and head somewhere else.

On the way she meets Childhood friend Poonam along with her baby boy Munna who were going to their In laws house whom they had never met before, after her husband had passed away. During their catch-up, the train derails and Poonam loses her limbs. In her dying moments she tells Madhu to take over her identity and gave Munna the love of her mother.

What's follows it the epic story of how Madhu meets Kamal( Rajesh Khanna), who she assumes the fake identity of Poonam and Kailash's return to destroy her life. At the end Kamal saves Madhu from committing suicide as the movie ends with a hug between them.
