Japan announces third state emergency ahead of Olympics

 

With just three months left for the start of the Olympics 2020(was postponed last year due to COVID-19) in Japan, the country on Friday announced a new virus state of Emergency in Tokyo and three other regions. 

The nation's virus outbreak is much smaller compared to many other countries, however a recent surge has now put officials and medical professionals in a state of worry. The Government and Olympics organizers though, have insisted that the tournament will go on ahead.

Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced that the new measure will run from April 25 to May 11. "Today we decided to declare a state of emergency in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hyogo prefectures" said PM Suga.

Local authorities in Japan have asked the government from to ban the sale of alcohol and shut down the malls. Some have even suggested the people to switch of the light at 8pm to create a feel of a curfew.

Japan has recorded over half a million cases since the pandemic began and over 10,000 deaths despite not enforcing strict lockdowns.
