BMC to expand Byculla Zoo by 10 Acres for new animals

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the Byculla Zoo which is run by the Civic body will now get expanded by 10 acres to house new enclosure to several exotic species of animals that will be brought to the facility in the next few years.

Officially known as the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, it is one of Mumbai's most popular locations. It is currently spread over at 53 acres of land, with 10 acres more to added as mentioned above.

Speaking to the PTI, Zoo Director Dr Sanjay Tripathi told that the expansion work will see construction of atleast 15 new enclosures to house animals like Giraffe, White Lion, Black Jaguar, Ostrich, Cheetah etc. He also said that the Union Government has already approved off this project in 2019.

According to BMC officals, the work said to be done  in the first two phases would cost around Rs 175 Crore and tenders for it have already been floated.

Under this phases, a place to experience African Savanna along with exotic birds, a hippopotamus enclosure, public amenities and installation of CCTV cameras will also be done.

At the moment Byculla Zoo has over 350 animals, birds and reptiles including monkeys, deers, elephants, crocodiles, penguins etc.
