On Saturday, the West Bengal Government announced a complete lockdown for 14 days starting from 6 am on May 16 till 6 pm on May 30. The government has also imposed a night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am beginning on Sunday Night.
- Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay said "To ensure health of the people and control Covid-19 situation, we are forced to impose this. There is now an unprecedented situation in the state where the scarcity of oxygen and other medicines is increasing. To control this situation, we are imposing strict conditions on the movement of transport and other sectors for two weeks."
Market places for essential needs will remain open from 7 am to 10 am, while Sweetmeat shops will remain open from 10 am to 5 pm. All other shops, establishments and shopping malls will remain closed for the next 14 days.
Government and Private offices will also remain shut except for emergency services. Public transport will be suspended. Home delivery and E-commerce trades will be allowed.
These new restrictions come a day after the state reported it's highest single day spike with 20,846 new cases and 136 fatalities. The state has reported over 1,094,802 cases and 12,993 deaths since the pandemic began.
