On Friday, Former Minneapolis Police Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22 years and six months for the murder of African-American George Floyd. The prosecutions had however requested for a 30 year sentence which was cut short.

With Good Behavior, Chauvin (45) can be paroled after serving two-thirds of this sentence or about 15 years. This would likely mean that Chauvin might be freed in 2036.

Chauvin finally broke his long term silence in the courtroom offering his condolences to the Floyd family and said that he hopes more information which comes out gives them " some peace of mind".

  • "But very briefly though, I do want to give my condolences to the Floyd Family. There's going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest. And I hope things will give you some peace of mind" said Chauvin.

Chauvin has been convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter for pressing his knee for 9 and a half minutes against Floyd's neck which resulted in his death.
