The so called "Group Of Death" Group F of the Euro 2020 kicked off on Tuesday which saw Defending Champions take on Hungary in a full house at Budapest while Reigning World Champions France took on Germany in Munich to go better than last time and win the Euros.
With three European Heavyweights pitted in a single group, Hungary were termed as outsiders according to experts and Pundits. In 2016, they toppef their group which included Portugal as well but were knocked out by Belgium in the Round of 16.
Playing in their home stadium in Budapest, the atmosphere generated by the home supporters reminded everyone what it was missing. The Budapest Arena will be the only stadium across the continent to work at Full Capacity.
There was no surprise as Portugal started off strongly. Diego Jota went close twice in opening fifteen minute but was unable to make amends. The biggest chance of the first half felt to the man everyone expected to score- Cristiano Ronaldo who somehow blazed his effort over the bar in the 43rd minute.
Hungary kept on fighting strongly and knocked on Portugal's door a few times. In the 80th minute, Hungary thought they had found a way through the visitors defence when substitute Szabolcs Schon drilled a low effort pass Rui Patricio. His celebrations were short lived as the Assistant Referee soon had his flag up for Offside.
That decision turned out to be a big game changer as Portugal found a late flurry of goals. The deadlock was broken in the 84th minute as Left Back Raphaël Guerreiro shot took a big deflection and went, much to the crowd's dismay.
The game was killed of 2 minutes later as Hungary conceded a penalty. Upstood Cristiano Ronaldo who made no mistake from the spot to grab his 10th goal in Euro's history overtaking Michel Platini's record of 9 goals.
The third goal game in second minute of injury time as Ronaldo worked a great one-two with Rafa Silva before cutting inside the box, rounding of the goalkeeper and slotting the ball in to make it 3-0 to Portugal. The Scoreline doesn't suggest the story of the game as we had seen often.
The biggest game of the Euros so far saw Germany host France at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Despite having only 38 per cent shot and 6 fewer shots then Germany, France hold out to a 1-0 win courtesy of an own goal by Mats Hummels in the 20th minute.
France would have won the game comfortably but were denied twice for offside in the second half. Germany now face Portugal on June 19, knowing anything less than victory can condemn them to another early exit from a major competition.
