17 dead in Military Plane crash in Philippines; 40 rescued

On Sunday morning, a Philippine C-130 military airplane carrying troops, crashed in the country's southern region. According to official reports, atleast 17 people are feared dead in this crash while 40 have been rescued so far.

The plane was transporting armed forces from the southern Cagayan de Ore city. It crashed after it missed a runway while attempting a landing on the island of Jolo.

Philippine military chief of staff General Cirilito Sobejana told the news agencies that the crash landing occured just before noon in the mountainous town of Patikul in Sulu province.

"It's is very unfortunate. The plane missed the runway and it was trying to regain power but failed and crashed" said Sobejana.

There is no clarity as of yet on the exact number of passengers on the plane. A local news agency had quoted the army Chief saying 85 people while a Reuters report quoted Defence Minister Delfin Lorenzana that as many as 92 people were onboard Including three pilots and five other crew members.
