Spain beat 10 men Switzerland 3-1 on penalties to reach Euro Semis

Having stunned the world by eliminating World Champions France, Switzerland took to the field at Saint Petersburg Stadium in Russia, attempting to write another historic chapter in their history and knock out three time Champions Spain.

Spain took the lead in the 8th minute as Jordi Alba's speculative volley took a big deflection of Denis Zakaria and went into the net. That goal was a Euro high, 10th Own Goal.

Just like how they faced off against France, Switzerland put on a brave fight and found their leveller through Xherdan Shaqiri. A horrible mix up between Ayemric Laporte and Pau Torres let Remo Freuler in who teed it up for Shaqiri in the middle, who despite pressure from the Spanish Defence, kept his composure to slot it home in the 68th minute.

The biggest moment came in the 77th minute when Remo Freuler was shown a straight red card by Referee Michael Oliver. The Swiss midfielder slid in and despite getting a contact on the ball, he caught Gerard Moreno with his high feet in the follow through.

Spain somehow were unable to make the man advantage count as they score remained level after Normal and Extra time. For a second straight game, Switzerland needed to overcome a penalty shootout.

Unlike Monday's shootout, this one turned out to be dreadful one as 5 of the 9 penalties taken were missed. Spain went first and Sergio Busquets's effort hit the post. Mario Gavranovic converted his attempt which was then followed up by Daniel Olmo.

The next three penalties were missed as Fabian Schar, Manuel Akanji for Switzerland and Rodri for Spain all saw their tamed efforts saved by Simon and Sommer.

Moreno took Spain's fourth penalty and placed his effort in the top right hand corner. Ruben Vargas then slammed his penalty well over the bar for Switzerland which led to Mikel Oyarzabal to tuck it home with the next kick to send Spain through to the Semis where they will face Italy.
