Real life Among Us: Mumbai Police arrests man impersonating as BMC worker for 28 years

The Mumbai Police have arrested a man who has been accused of working for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for 28 years on fake documents. The civic body had filed a case against the man a month ago. He had joined as a gardener in 1993.

This imposter was later identified as Ramesh Maruti Shelar. He was arrested from south Mumbai. The police have recovered two PANs and two Aadhaars (one on his own name and one on his stolen identity).

According to police, Shelar allegedly used photocopies of all the documents of a BMC peon, Sopan Maruti Sable who joined in 1989. In all these years he has gathered around Rs 43 lakh from the salaries.

The police also found out two bank accounts of him (one on his name and one on his stolen identity which was his salary account). He used to transfer the money from his salary account to his main account.

In 2017, the BMC wanted to verify the credentials of a peon and a gardener after finding them identical, including the father's name and date of birth. When they tried to check the original documents, he stopped reporting to work. The officials waited to hear his version which never came.

He has now been remanded in police custody till August 20.
