On Wednesday, 4th August 2021, some significant achievements made by Indian Sportsmen & Sportswomen at the Tokyo Olympics are:-
- India grappler Ravi Kumar Dahiya stormed into the finals of the men's freestyle 57kg category at the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Kazakhstan's Nurislam Sanayev in the semi-finals here at Makuhari Messe Hall A, Mat B on Wednesday. The Indian wrestler won by fall assuring India of silver medal.
Dahiya who will now be contesting the finals on Thursday is the first to enter the final since Sushil in 2012. In the first period, Ravi Dahiya managed to take a 2-1 lead and in the second period, the pressure was entirely on Sanayev.
Sanayev bounced back strongly in the second period and he quickly eradicated the lead of Dahiya. Early on, in the second period, the entire pressure was put on the Indian grappler. In the end, Dahiya staged a comeback and as a result, India has been assured of a silver medal.
Earlier on Wednesday, Ravi Kumar Dahiya had stormed into the semi-finals of the men's freestyle 57kg category after defeating Bulgaria's Georgi Valentinov Vangelov by pure brute strength and agility at Mat A by 14-4.
- 23-year-old Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain won the bronze medal in the semifinal of women's welterweight (64-69kg) category at the Tokyo Olympics on Wednesday.
Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey defeated Lovlina by a unanimous decision of 5-0. All five judges gave decisions in the favour of Turkish pugilist after she dominated all the rounds in the bout.
Though her father Tiken Borgohain was happy with whichever medal she won, Lovlina told reporters after her bout, "Definitely not feeling good, as I have lost the match. Every time I have to settle for bronze so I am feeling bad about it".
Lovlina is now only the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh in Beijing 2008, and MC Mary Kom in London 2012 to win the bronze for India at the showpiece event.
- Indian Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra progressed for the men's final here in his first attempt at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday after attaining an automatic qualification in the Men's Long Throws Qualification -- Group A.
Neeraj Chopra who was throwing the javelin in 15th position in the group threw a monstrous throw of 86.65m and automatically qualified for the final after just his first attempt. Finland's Lassi Etelatalo was another thrower who automatically qualified in the first attempt.
Qualifying performance of 83.50 (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) will advance to the final of the men's javelin throw. However, these 12 performers will be a compilation of competitors from Group A and B. The Group B qualification round will take place later in the day and the remaining throws of Group A are also happening.
The men's Javelin throw final will be on August 7 at the Olympic Stadium.
