Punjab CM Captain Amrinder Singh & his cabinet tenders resignation due to 'continued humiliation' by the Congress

In a nasty game of politics of the Congress, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amrinder Singh along with his council of ministers tendered resignation to Punjab Governor -Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday shortly after 4.30 p.m.

This development comes just four months ahead of the assembly elections in Punjab. As per reports from PTI, earlier in the day he had phoned Congress President Sonia Gandhi and expressed his anguish over the "humiliation" meted to him.

In his press conference Amrinder Singh said, "I was humiliated three times by the Congress leadership in the past two months...they called the MLAs to Delhi twice and now convened CLP here in Chandigarh today.

  • The Congress party's move of holding an emergency Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting convened by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) at 5 pm is widely being considered to be a tactic to remove Amrinder from chief ministership.

Captain Amarinder Singh said he would decide his future political course of action in consultation with his supporters who have stood by him for over five decades.

"There is always an option, and I will use that option when the time comes...at the moment I am still in Congress," he said after submitting his resignation.

  • "Apparently they (Congress high command) do not have confidence in me and did not think I could handle my job. But I felt humiliated at the manner in which they handled the whole affair," he told media persons at the gate of the Raj Bhavan after giving his resignation letter to the Governor. "Let them appoint who they trust," he remarked, taking a dig at the party leadership.

Amrinder Singh, who was the captain of the Indo-Pakistan War took the oath as the 26th CM of Punjab in 2017 after Congress won the assembly elections with the majority.

There had been speculations, revolving around this topic for months with grudge between him and Navjot Singh Siddhu. There are chances that the next CM of Punjab could be Siddhu.
