On Monday, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai launched the Delhi Government's "Red Light On, Gaadi Off" campaign with an aim to tackle air pollution.
- In this campaign, commuters are advised to switch off the engines of their vehicles as soon as they stop at red light. It was introduced by the government last year. This year the first phase of the campaign will run for a month till November 18.
"According to data from the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), if this campaign is successful, there could be a 13 to 20 per cent reduction in vehicular pollution" Rai addressed the media at the ITO Chowk in the national captial.
A few days ago, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had urged the people not to take their vehicle atleast once a week and travel on the metro or use other means of for public transportation.
Switching vehicles off at red light can reduce pollution by 13 per cent and can save Rs 2500 Crore per year, stated Kejriwal while citing the research data from PCRA.
"Last time the campaign was very successful. We appeal to the teachers, lawyers, office workers and trade union people that we need your cooperation. With the AQI (Air Quality Index) level of Delhi rising with the start of stubble burning, we have decided to reduce our pollution level" added Kejriwal.
