SC grants protection from arrest to Param Bir Singh after Ex Mumbai CP reveals his whereabouts

On Monday, Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh informed the Supreme Court that he is in India and not absconding and told that he was ready to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) within 48 hours via his lawyer.

"I am very much in the country but hiding as I face threat to my life. I am ready to appear before the CBI within 48 hours. If I am wrong, then take me to the task" said Singh.

A few days ago a SC bench headed by Justice S K Kaul had asked his lawyer to inform the court about his whereabouts while declining his request of protection from arrest.

  • Following his statement today, the apex court has now granted protection from arrest to him and has asked him to join the investigation. The court has agreed to hear Singh's plea and issued notice to Maharashtra government and CBI. The next hearing has been scheduled to December 6.

A magistrate court in Mumbai on last Wednesday had declared him a "proclaimed offender" in an extortion case registered against him and some other police personnel.

He last appeared at his office in May this year after which he went on a leave.
