Breaking: Sergio Aguero announces retirement from football amid heart issues

Amid concerns over heart related issues, FC Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero on Wednesday announced his retirement, bringing an end to his illustrious playing career at the age of 33.

Having made a name for himself in his country of Argentina with Independiente, Spanish giants, Atletico Madrid came in offering for him. His 5 years at Atletico saw him emerge as a wonderkid on the world stage as he helped Atletico to the 2009-10 Europa League title along with the Super Cup in the same year.

He would go on to cement his name in legacy books while at Manchester City. In his 10 year tenure with the English club, Kun won the 5 Premier League titles, 6 League Cups, one FA Cup and 2 Community shield scoring 260 goals for the club including the iconic late winner against QPR on the final day of the 2011-12 season which began City's rise to the top.

In June 2021, Aguero joined FC Barcelona in hopes of playing with his real life best friend, Lionel Messi. Things didn't quite go to plan though as Messi would soon be force to leave Barcelona.

  • In October, Aguero suffered a chest pain in his side's draw with Deportivo Alaves. Tests results indicated that he would be out for three months.

However after consultations with specialists, he was adviced it was risk to continue playing.

"My health comes first. Medical staff have told me it's best to stop playing and so I am now leaving Barcelona and retiring from professional football" a teared Aguero said at a press conference in Barcelona.
