Indian Music Legend Bappi Lahiri passes away aged 69; funeral on Thursday

Suffering from obstructive sleep apnea and recurrent chest infection, one of Indian Music Industry's most jolly singer-composer legend Bappi Lahiri passed away at the age of 69 in Mumbai.

Dr Deepak Namjoshi, Bappi Lahiri’s treating doctor and director CritiCare hospital, Juhu, informed that the icon had passed away around 11.40 – 11.45 on Tuesday night.

  • Bappi Lahiri’s funeral will take place tomorrow, Thursday at around 10 am after his son, Bappa Lahiri’s arrival from the USA. The funeral will happen at Pawan Hans cremation ground in Santacruz, Mumbai.

Several celebrities including Kajol, Shaan, Alka Yagnik, Rakesh Roshan, and Poonam Dhillon arrived at the late composer’s residence to pay their last respects. Tributes have also poured in from celebrities to politicians and Bappi Da's loved ones on the social media.

Last year, Lahiri was admitted to a hospital in Mumbai after the veteran was detected with “mild COVID symptoms.” The singer was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital as a “precautionary measure”.

  • Bappi da ruled the music industry for more than two decades from mid 70s. His first break was in 1973 film Nanhe Shikari. Bappi da started as a tabla player in his young age.
  • Though he was known as a 'disco king' for his peppy numbers such as Disco Dancer, Yaad Aa raha hai, Raat Baaki, Tamma Tamma among others, he composed melancholic & romantic songs such as Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intezaar, Chalte Chalte, Tumhara Pyaar Chahiye, Dil Main Ho Tum as well.

His last Bollywood song titled Bhankas was for the 2020 film Baaghi 3. Bappi da was last seen on Bigg Boss 15, where he had come to promote the launch of his grandson Swastik’s new song, Baccha Party. It was his first and last appearance on Bigg Boss.
