Mass protests engulf J-K over Kashmiri Pandit's terror killing

Protests are being held in various of Jammu and Kashmir since Thursday evening against the targeted killing of a young Kashmiri Pandit.

Rahul Bhatt (aged 35), a clerk in the revenue department, was shot dead by two terrorists wielding pistols on Thursday. His last rites were held in J-K's Bantalab earlier today.

As per eyewitnesses, he was shot thrice. "One bullet hit him in the right side of the chest while two bullets pierced the left side, damaging the heart", doctors at a Srinagar hospital said.

Bhatt lived in the Kashmiri Pandit cluster of Sheikhpora, Budgam, along with his wife. He belonged to Beerwah, also in Budgam; the rest of his family, including his parents, had already migrated to Jammu.

The police fired tear gas shells and lathi charged the protesters who were demanding probe into the incident, security and justice.

The members of the Kashmiri Pandit Employees Association also staged a protest in Anantnag demanding justice and safe relocation.

In Sheikhpora, people threatened mass resignations if they were not provided security. People also requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to speak to them.

Kashmiri Pandits living in the Sheikhpora cluster demanded that the divisional commissioner and deputy commissioner of Budgam district come there and hear their complaints regarding their safety in the valley.

Police said "The Resistance Front", a Lashkar-e-Taiba shadow outfit, carries out targeted killings in the Kashmir valley, particularly of migrant workers, members of the minority communities, and off-duty police personnel.
