As the nationwide protest continues to intensify in crisis-hit Sri Lanka, Prime Minister Mahindra Rajapaksa on Monday tendered his resignation. This move is likely to pave the way for a new cabinet in the country.
As per Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Friday had asked the Prime Minister to step down as a solution to the ongoing political crisis in the country.
The Asian country has been plunged in weeks of economic crisis stemming from foreign exchange shortage which has led to shortage in essential supplies such as fuel, food and medicines.
The authorities have deployed the Army to ensure the security of general public as clashes took place between protesters in the capital, Colombo. The country also announced a second state of emergency in five weeks.
