Loudspeaker Row: Mumbai Police detains 8 MNS workers

On Friday, the Mumbai Police detained eight Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for allegedly distributing party chief Raj Thackeray's letter over Loudspeaker Row in Chembur.

In the letter, Thackeray urged people to report to the local police station if the permissible decibel limits for loudspeaker are violated in the city.

The controversy started in April when Thackeray issued an ultimatum to the Maharashtra Government to remove loudspeaker from mosques by May 3, failing which, he warned, MNS workers will play Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers.

  • At the end of the deadline, numerous MNS workers were detained for allegedly trying to put up loudspeaker outside mosques to play Hanuman Chalisa.

Notably, a Maharashtra Court has issued a non-bailable warrant against Thackeray in a 2008 case for allegedly making inflammatory speeches.
