Single-use plastics to be banned in India from July 1

As per the announcement by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, India will ban the use of single use plastics from July 1 in order to prevent its harmful effects on environment and to pursue the global climatic goals.

"India will ban the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of identified single-use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, all across the country from July 1," the ministry said in a statement.

  • Other items prohibited include plastic sticks for ballons, earbuds with plastic sticks, ice-cream sticks, candy sticks, plastic cubs, plastic glasses, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns, stirrers, plastic spoons, forks, knives and straws.
