Congress hold nationwide protest as ED quizzes Sonia Gandhi; several senior leaders detained

On Thursday, as many as 75 Congress MPs including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and several workers were detained by the Delhi Police for holding demonstrations against the questioning of party's interim president Sonia Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the National Herald Case.

  • She has been summoned again by the ED and has been asked to appear before them on July 25.

Senior Congress leaders including P Chidambaram, Ajay Maken, KC Venugopal, Shashi Tharoor, Sachin Pilot, Ashok Gehlot and others were among those detained.

"All Congress MPs and CWC Members have courted mass arrest outside our Party HQs in a show of collective solidarity with Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi, a target of Vishguru's political vendetta. We are being taken away to a police station in Old Delhi evidently," Congress leader Jairam Ramesh tweeted.

  • In Chandigarh, Police used water cannons to disperse Congress workers and leaders as they protested over the questioning by ED against Sonia.

  • In Telangana, Congress party workers torched a two-wheeler near the ED office in Hyderabad.

  • Whereas in Delhi, the party workers stopped a train and blocked the railway tracks at Shivaji Bridge railway station.

The ED on June 1 had summoned Sonia Gandhi to appear before it's investigators on June 8 for the first time in connection with a money laundering case involving the National Herald. However she was unable to attend as she was found to be Covid positive.

Earlier in June, Sonia's son Rahul Gandhi was also quizzed by the agency for five-days.
