Mumbai Police recieve '26/11 type' terror attack threat from Pakistan; probe launched

On Friday night, the Mumbai Police recieved a threat message from a Pakistani number that gave warning of a "26/11 type" terror attack.

The message said that six people will execute the attack in India.

"Last night at around 11.35 pm, some terror-related messages were received in one of Mumbai traffic police control room numbers. Prima facie, the number seems to be from Pakistan," Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar was quoted by the Indian Express.

The police have now begun their investigation on the matter and security agencies have been put on alert.

"The messages mention a terror threat to Mumbai. Some of the numbers mentioned in the messages are being verified. We are verifying the numbers in these chats. The Mumbai Police are taking the matter very seriously and working to ensure no harm is caused to anyone," Phansalkar added.

  • This development comes just two days after a security scare of a boat carrying AK47, rifles, guns and ammunition was found on the Harihareshwar beach in Raigad district of Maharashtra.

On 26 November 2008, 10 Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists from Pakistan arrived by sea route and opened fire, killing hundreds of people, including security personnel, and injuring several others in Mumbai.

Nine terrorists were later killed by the security forces, including the NSG. The only terrorist captured alive, Ajmal Kasab was hanged to death almost four years after the attack on November 21, 2012.
