On PM Modi's birthday tomorrow, eight cheetahs will be brought to India marking a fruition to a 12 years old conceptualized idea of introducing wild southern African cheetah for the first time in any another continent.

  • The cheetahs will arrive in Gwalior on Saturday morning after their transcontinental flight, which will take place overnight to allow the animals to travel during the coolest hours of the day.

From Gwalior, the eight cheetahs will be transferred by helicopter to Kuno National Park where they will be welcomed by a delegation led by PM Modi.

  • Project Cheetah was approved by the Supreme Court in 2020 as a pilot programme to reintroduce the species to India.

Out of the eight cheetahs, three are male and five are female, tasked with resurrecting a species that was declared extinct in 1952.
