On Wednesday, eight Indian National Congress (INC) Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from Goa, including former chief minister Digambar Kamat have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.

  • Holding a press conference just after the Congress MLAs' joining, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and state BJP chief Sadanant Shet Tanavade said that BJP's strength in the 40-member Assembly has gone up to 28 with the eight new entrants.

"With today's development, the BJP now enjoys the support of 33 MLAs (including two of the Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party and three Independents). These Congress MLAs have joined the BJP unconditionally," Sawant said.

  • The eight MLAs who joined BJP are Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Phaldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira and Rudolf Fernandes.

"It is Congress chhodo (quit Congress), BJP ko jodo," joked Michael Lobo as the MLAs announced their switch in yet another 'Operation Lotus,' named after the BJP's election symbol to which Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera reacted, "It's 'Operation Kichad (Mud)'".
