King Charles III appoints Rishi Sunak as UK's 57th Prime Minister

On Tuesday, Rishi Sunak has become the new, 57th Prime Minister of United Kingdom after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace who asked him to form a government.

  • Sunak will be the youngest prime minister in two centuries when he takes office as the third prime minister of the year. He will be making a statement soon after he arrives at 10 Downing Street. He is also an Indian origin Hindu leader, however, netizens have been debating about his ancestry being in Pakistan.

Meanwhile, outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss has officially become the UK's shortest-serving PM, having been forced to resign after only 45 days in office.

  • On Monday, former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak became the Conservative Party leader less than two months after he lost to Liz Truss in the Tory leadership race. Sunak's change in fate was triggered by the resignation of Truss after high-profile sackings and resignations in her Cabinet, following a heavily criticised mini-budget that left the UK pound tumbling.

Truss' rise to power was aided by the Tory leadership crisis that erupted following Boris Johnson's resignation in July, as well as a series of resignations of cabinet members in protest of his scandal-plagued leadership.
