Naval sailor found dead on INS Vikrant in apparent suicide

According to a Defense release, a 19-year-old Naval sailor was found hanging onboard INS Vikrant on Thursday morning.

The deceased sailor was unmarried and belonged to Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He joined the Indian Navy in 2021 and had been deployed on board INS Vikrant after the commissioning of the indigenous aircraft carrier.

The sailor's body has been sent for postmortem examination and the Harbour police have registered a case.

The incident is being treated as a case of suicide, and a Board of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the matter.

Despite the implementation of a policy by the Indian Navy to tackle the rising cases of suicide among service members, such incidents have been on the rise lately. The Ministry of Defence disclosed to Parliament on July 19, 2022, that the Indian Navy Strategy for Mental Health Assistance Resilience and Training (IN-SMART) was promulgated on April 12 to curb suicides among serving Navy personnel. Additionally, a toll-free helpline has been established solely for Indian Navy personnel at INHS Asvini, the Indian Navy's flagship hospital.
